Johnson O’Connor is a regional Public Accounting Firm located outside of Boston in Wakefield, MA. We are seeking a Principal in the Client Accounting Services department with 10+ years of accounting experience who is interested in participating in their own career growth and work with a diverse client base to join our team.
The candidate will play a critical role in overseeing the accounting operations for a portfolio of clients as well as oversight throughout the for-profit client practice. Reporting directly to the Partner in charge of the department, you will provide leadership, guidance, and technical expertise to a team of 6-8 direct reports. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual with a strong background in accounting and client service to make a significant impact in a dynamic and growing organization.
The successful candidate will have strong interpersonal and analytical skills, as well as education within business. The technical ability to address questions, identify issues, refine processes and effectively communicate this to clients and staff will be imperative to success. Whereas national firms tend to be compartmentalized, our firm offers the successful candidate the ability to service all aspects of our clients’ business and back-office accounting needs, and see client engagements from start to finish, thus becoming a valued advisor to clients. This position can be fully remote, but candidate must be available to work East Coast hours.

The Job Responsibilities Include:
- Lead and manage a team of accounting professionals, providing guidance, mentoring and performance evaluations.
- Oversee the accounting operations for a select group of clients, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting.
- Address technical and general accounting issues encountered by direct reports, providing guidance and solutions to ensure compliance with accounting standards and regulations.
- Manage ad hoc projects, such as budgeting and forecasting, cash flow analysis, chart of accounts analysis, and client onboarding/offboarding.
- Collaborate with partners and other department leaders to develop and implement best practices, process improvements, and standard operating procedures.
- Serve as a subject matter expert in accounting principles and industry-specific regulations, providing guidance to clients and internal teams as needed.
- Foster strong client relationships by providing exceptional service, resolving issues promptly, and proactively identifying opportunities to add value.
- Stay updated on emerging trends, changes in accounting regulations, and industry developments to ensure the department remains at the forefront of industry standards.
The Job-Essential Requirements Are:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA designation preferred.
- Extensive experience (10+ years) in public accounting, with a focus on client accounting services or similar field.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles, regulations, and standards (GAAP, IFRS, etc.).
- Previous experience managing a team and leading client engagements (within a public accounting firm preferred).
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to address complex accounting issues effectively.
- Proficiency in financial analysis, budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow analysis.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to effectively interact with clients, team members, and firm leadership.
- Strong organizational and project management abilities, with the capacity to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Advanced proficiency in accounting software and MS Excel.
